DFFE achieves unqualified audit for 2024/25 financial year
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has achieved an unqualified audit opinion from the Auditor-General for the 2024/25 financial year ended March 31, which reflects robust financial management and good governance, says Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Minister Dion George on October 13.
This was achieved despite a R2.5-billion lower budget over the medium-term expenditure framework, and the department demonstrated accountability and fiscal prudence in the management of public funds, he adds.
“This achievement reflects our responsible stewardship of public resources. Even with severe budget constraints, our team has maintained the highest standards of financial governance and integrity,” he says.
The Auditor-General acknowledged the department’s progress in strengthening internal controls and governance systems.
However, the audit identified areas requiring continued focus, particularly on consequence management linked to historic irregular expenditure. These legacy cases stem from older contracts found to be non-compliant with National Treasury regulations and remain under active resolution, George points out.
“Addressing these legacy issues is a priority, and we have implemented stronger oversight and stricter accountability processes, and have improved contract management to ensure that all future expenditure fully complies with the law,” he notes.
The DFFE has initiated a series of corrective measures, including the enhancement of internal audit functions, tighter procurement monitoring and regular compliance reviews, he adds.
These actions form part of a broader department-wide effort to strengthen governance and uphold the principles of transparency and good administration.
Further, the department aims to maintain an unqualified audit opinion and ensure that every rand spent delivers measurable benefit to South Africa’s people and environment, the Minister says.
“A sound audit outcome is not an end in itself, but reflects a culture of integrity, professionalism and accountability that must define how government serves the public. Our focus remains on ensuring that good governance translates into real, sustainable results,” George says.
