Digital switchgear goes green
A new medium voltage (MV) switchgear range uses pure air and vacuum interruption instead of sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) gas, making it environment-friendly while also allowing users to take advantage of its digital features to unlock the value of data.
Schneider Electric recently announced the commercial availability of its SM AirSeT MV switchgear. The new offer maintains the compact size and operating mechanism of the company’s popular SM6 range for grid and commercial applications.
The new technology won the Industrial Energy Efficiency Award from Hannover Messe in 2020 and has received various other industry recognitions.
Since unveiling the company’s combination of innovative Shunt Vacuum Interruption, or SVI, technology and pure air insulation in 2019, Schneider Electric notes that it has built numerous successful pilot projects of the SF6-free medium voltage range at both utility and private customer sites.
The new switchgear is designed for secondary electrical distribution markets, such as industrial and commercial building applications and utilities, and is now available across Asia and Europe.
The company highlights a number of functionalities offered by its SM AirSeT switchgear, including a SF6-free switch-fuse, which is often the preferred solution for building installations, while also retaining the operating mode of traditional SF6-based equipment.
The natively digital SM AirSeT switchgear includes condition-based maintenance features, feeding data from its sensors to both local field tools or applications and sophisticated analytics tools such as those offered by Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure architecture and platform. The entire platform of equipment is becoming natively digital, connected to cloud data sharing in order to better serve efficiency and safety of operations.
