Luminaires and glass fibre reinforced polyester poles manufacturer BEKA Schréder is proud to have worked with consulting engineers and project managers firm Bicon Consulting Engineers, consultant company WSP, and information technology specialists RM Consulting in providing a successful energy efficient light-emitting diode (LED) lighting solution for the ECL Business Park in Kitwe, Zambia.

The ECL Business Park is the city’s newest office and business park, with a mixed-use development comprising a shopping centre, hotel, convention centre and an office block.

The ECL Business Park was officially commissioned in December last year, with BEKA Schréder supplying various decorative LED lighting solutions.

BEKA Schréder sales representative Kevin du Toit says BEKA Schréder supplied ZELA post-top luminaires for the parking area, with BEKA LED post bollards illuminating the walkways leading to the buildings.

“Their distinct design lends itself perfectly to the setting. Further, no spill light is emitted in an upward direction, ensuring that there is no light pollution,” he adds.

The main entrance to the ECL Business Park is illuminated by the ILUMup – a versatile in-ground uplight – which offers a wide range of photometric distributions for all types of illumination. The façades of the buildings are accentuated by BEKA LED duo up- and downlighters, which are weather- and corrosion-proof, thereby ensuring a long lifetime.

LED flood high-efficient LED floodlights have been installed in the outdoor parking area of the shopping centre, while the CITEA LED decorative streetlights have been installed at the shopping centre entrance. The spiral driveway to the covered parking area is illuminated by the BEKA Series 31 LED bulkhead.

Meanwhile, Du Toit says the advantages of LED technology include reduced energy consumption, which leads to significant energy savings, compared with traditional light sources. LED technology requires low maintenance, which translates into a fast return on investment.

Logistics was a challenge for the project, says Du Toit. “It is of vital importance to ensure that all required information is gathered, as most communication is done remotely between South Africa and Zambia.”

He adds that, with export projects, it is important to optimise the lighting solution to make it economically viable and give the customer the best return on investment.
