Fire detection and safety solutions for hazardous environments
A range of products for the detection of fires in explosive atmospheres has recently been launched by ACTOM Industry. The systems have been tested and certified by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) to meet the criteria of SANS 1515.
The company, which specialises in mine winder hoists, and power electronic drive, control, and switchgear technology, has expanded its portfolio to include fire detection systems, which include:
- Air velocity detectors
- Carbon monoxide detectors
- Methane detectors
- Particle smoke detectors
In 2023, ACTOM Industry acquired sole ownership of the Safdy air velocity detector and Safdy methane detector, which granted it exclusive rights to manufacture, market and distribute the products.
Formerly known as the Safdy flow meter, the ACTOM air velocity detector features a solid-state airflow sensor designed specifically for monitoring airflow rates in challenging environments typical of mining operations. Utilising the VORTEX method, it is designed to ensure precise measurements independent of small particles, making it particularly suited for dusty or high-moisture conditions.
Appropriate air circulation is vital for safety in underground mining operations. The air velocity detector can detect decreases in airflow, alerting operators through supervisory control and data acquisition, or SCADA, systems. Housed in a robust metal enclosure, it is engineered to withstand impacts and minimises the effects of crossflow, for consistent and reliable performance.
Boasting an accuracy rate of approximately 89%, the ACTOM air velocity detector promises durability and precision. Its resilience against water mist and dust helps minimise maintenance demands, ensuring continuous safety in hazardous environments.
