Engen backs young entrepreneurs with disabilities in Witbank
This article has been supplied.
Fourteen young people living with disabilities from Witbank have taken their first steps towards running their own businesses thanks to Engen’s New Venture Creation Learnership.
Launched in September 2023, the programme equips participants with practical skills in business planning, finance, marketing and customer service. Over the past 18 months, learners have completed NQF Level 2 training and, to mark this milestone, each received a brand-new laptop along with computer skills training to help them put their business ideas into action. They will soon progress to NQF Level 4.
The support has already paid off, with some inspirational entrepreneurs starting their own businesses.
Success stories from Witbank
YBS-Projects PPE Solutions, founded by Vaneciah Nompumelelo Mahlangu and Nqobile Ngwenya, supplies PPE and safety gear that ensures compliance and real protection. The business began humbly with just R1,500 worth of stock and R500 equity. Through resilience, discipline, and lessons from the learnership, the duo rebuilt and grew their venture, now holding R10,000 in stock value and R5,000 in working capital. Their strategic location near mines and power stations positions them strongly in the market. With their new laptops, they are building safety files, running online marketing campaigns, and keeping accurate financial records — professionalising their operations and fuelling growth.
InkSplash Designs, founded by Xolani Siboniso Masingwane is carving a niche with customised T-shirt printing for schools, events, and individuals. With his laptop, Xolani can design and edit orders more efficiently, manage stock and finances, and expand his customer base online. His creativity and strong customer-first approach are already making InkSplash a trusted name.
Structured growth ahead
“Entrepreneurship is a powerful tool for economic growth and job creation,” says Olwethu Mdabula, Engen CSI Manager. “By empowering young people with disabilities to start sustainable businesses, we are enabling them to uplift their communities.”
“Progression is at the heart of this programme,” adds Dee Mdeka, Engen’s Skills Development Facilitator. “From learning the basics of business, to launching and scaling, we walk with learners every step of the way. It’s about building confidence, resilience, and the ability to create lasting impact.”
With progression to NQF Level 4 and 5 still ahead, Engen remains committed to equipping Witbank’s learners with the mentorship, skills, and resources to grow thriving enterprises that contribute to local economic development.
In total, 44 young people with disabilities are enrolled in the New Venture Creation Learnership across Cape Town, Soweto and Witbank, building the skills and confidence to become the next generation of entrepreneurs.
