Fugitive dust reduced on mine haulage roads
Owing to the dust emissions generated on mine haulage roads and the growing health concerns associated with Covid-19, environmental management company I-CAT has developed the GreenBit dust-suppression solution.
The water-soluble and easy-to-apply product improves tyre grip while reducing the need for constant grading and watering of roads, thereby saving on water resources and overall cost.
Dust on the haulage roads where the mining vehicles continuously drive generates high concentrations of dust.
“GreenBit contains about 70% all-natural binders, a by-product of the paper and pulp industry. The product is a suitable solution to mitigate health and safety risks associated with dust emissions, making it an effective solution for road establishment and dust control on agricultural and mine roads,” says I-CAT director Lourens Jansen van Rensburg.
Jansen van Rensburg explains that GreenBit is a unique combination of natural binders and emulsified bitumen. GreenBit is effective in creating a durable road surface sealant and is completely water soluble. GreenBit is supplied as a liquid and therefore easy to handle and transport. GreenBit is added to water spray trucks in the desired concentration and applied to the prepared road surface.
“Government regulations enforce stricter health practices at mines – now more than ever, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. The I-CAT GreenBit product mitigates the dust emissions generated on mine haulage roads, which positively contributes to air quality.”
I-CAT supplies the GreenBit solution to mining companies, as well as other dust-suppression service providers. I-CAT empowers smaller dust suppression contractors with training and technical support in using its solutions.
“We invested in a new bitumen-emulsifier mill with a capacity of 10 k
