Name of the Project
Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP) – Ratawi oilfield.

Location
Southern Iraq.

Project Owner/s
The project is led by TotalEnergies (45%, operator) alongside its partners Basra Oil Company (30%) and QatarEnergy (25%).

Project Description
The GGIP is intended to advance the development of Iraq’s natural resources and strengthen its electricity supply. The 4-in-1 project includes recovering gas – currently flared at three oilfields, in southern Iraq, to fuel power plants, build a 1 GWac solar farm, establish a seawater treatment plant and redevelop the Ratawi oilfield. The Ratawi oilfield is one of Iraq’s lowest-emission oil sites.

Phase 1 aims to increase production to 120 000 bbl/d.

The launch of Phase 2 (full field development) will increase production to 210 000 bbl/d, with no routine flaring. The 160-million cubic feet a day of associated gas produced will be fully processed, owing to the 300-million-cubic-feet-a-day Gas Midstream Project (GMP). The GMP, which will also treat previously flared gas from two other fields, in southern Iraq, will deliver processed gas to the national grid, where it will fuel power plants with a production capacity of about 1.5 GW, providing electricity for 1.5-million Iraqi households.

Potential Job Creation
Currently, 2 700 workers have been mobilised at the GGIP site, including 2 000 Iraqis. The workforce is expected to increase to about 7 000 Iraqis at the peak of construction.

Capital Expenditure
The GGIP will require capital expenditure of $13-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
Phase 1 of the Ratawi oilfield is expected to come on stream by early 2026, and Phase 2 by 2028. The GMP started construction in early 2025. An early production facility to process 50-million cubic feet a day of associated gas will start in early 2026, together with the Ratawi Phase 1 oil production.
