– Take complete control of your Safety Strategy by protecting your drivers

Safety is everything, to everyone. This statement is never truer within the mining community. Mining houses are completely safety driven and are founded on the principles of eliminating fatalities, providing a safe working environment and putting employee safety first. With Safety as the core, implementation of strategies and campaigns aimed at mitigating risk have become second nature. Far too often areas for safety improvement which do not impact on production tend to be neglected. The simple tasks we all take for granted, such as travelling to and from our places of work, individually or collectively are where the highest frequency of incidents occur. It is in this space where the biggest opportunities for risk identification and behavioural change come.

DriveRisk provide Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) to a diverse array of industries including the mining industry. The ADAS offering provides a comprehensive Driver Safety Program encompassing Driver Behaviour, Fatigue Man-agement and Collision Avoidance technologies. Providing drivers with real time feedback on risky driving incidents through audible and visual alerts significantly reduces the likelihood for incidents and accidents to occur.

ADAS lies at the forefront of ensuring that the overall safety and alertness of drivers are monitored and sustained. DriveRisk provide tools that actively monitor and manage the behavioural risks that are the root cause of risky behaviour and collisions.

Technologies that form part of the ADAS sphere are predominantly camera and sensor based. Backed by powerful processors and Artificial Intelligence, camera technologies have the ability to trigger events with the use of sensors, machine vision and object detection. Monitoring both the internal and external environments of a vehicle, these technologies comprehensively cover all critical aspects of vehicle operation. Externally - monitoring the oncoming environment and alerting a driver to potential risk provides enough time for reaction to an impending collision with a vehicle, pedestrian or object in the road. Furthermore, pro-viding attention to road markings and traffic signs improves upon the general awareness of a driver, ensuring that traffic law is observed and abided by as well as preventing excessive road speeds or the unsafe changing of lanes. Internally - monitoring the willful and habitual behaviours of a driver not only highlights the area of concerns in their driving behaviour but alerts a driver to the behaviours that may need instant rectification whilst driving such as fatigue, distracted driving and inattention, before it is too late. These in-cab alerts not only improve upon their safety but the safety of the general road using public. Rather than taking a reactive approach these technologies proactively monitor behavioural risk at the source.

Clay Colegate, business development executive at DriveRisk, points out that by harnessing Intelli-
gent Data and providing risk identifying informa-
tion coupled with behaviour changing solutions, DriveRisk enable customers to establish an accountable and structured solution to pro-
actively manage driver behaviour. “Our awarding winning Driver Safety Program provides analytics and effective coaching tools by utilising data collected from state-of-the-art video event recorders, Machine Vision and Artificial Intelligence”.

Colegate further states, “Closing the loop on Behavioural Risk Management through an integrated Driver Coaching Platform provides fleet operators with the opportunity to engage with their drivers and implement safety strategies that address current risk and proactively prevent the repetition of these risky root causes and collision leading behaviours.”

Immediate benefit can be had from these tech-nologies; however, the rectification and sustain-ability of behavioral change management can only be achieved through ongoing and constructive engagements with the individual responsible – the driver. Far too often we forget the human element behind on-road risk, incidents and accidents. According to Colegate, “We are all freely willing to invest in technology and adopt the change that naturally comes from this but fail the human being. What in-vehicle technologies ultimately do is provide us with an opportunity to engage. Engagement with a driver on these findings and the establishment of
a Driver Coaching Program is the key to success. We all naturally become complacent behind the wheel, and poor driving decisions are not always by choice but rather a bad habit that has been established through years of repetitive action.”

By harnessing Artificial Intelligence and Machine Vision, operators can change the way they look at behaviour and road safety. Providing insights and real time risk identification of behaviour is
only as powerful as what you do with this informa-tion after the fact. The true benefit and a proven formula are through engagement with the individuals responsible.

Gone are the days of A to B transport, and the latest data insights through in-vehicle technologies have taught us how to be more effective, more efficient and a lot safer.
