Uranium company Global Atomic Corporation is making significant strides towards achieving first production at its high-grade Dasa uranium mine, in Niger, by the first quarter of 2026.

Despite challenges this year, the Toronto-based company on December 18 reported steady progress in mine development and operational milestones.

According to the miner, the geopolitical climate in Niger has improved, with the government supporting Global Atomic’s operating subsidiary Somida.

A government committee has also been formed to streamline decisions related to the mine's operations, logistics and taxation. Discussions have focused on alternative logistic routes as the Benin border remains closed, with a potential reopening in early 2025.

Meanwhile, initiatives are under way to establish access to the Port of Algiers, in Algeria.

On the financing front, the US development bank continues to process a project finance debt facility, with a decision expected in early 2025 following administrative adjustments. Parallel negotiations for a joint venture are advancing, and a definitive agreement is anticipated next year, the company said.

Key infrastructure milestones have also been achieved at the Dasa mine. Development of the first five mining levels will proceed in 2025, with stoping operations expected by the fourth quarter of next year.

Site preparations for the mill are well under way, supported by local contractors. The workforce at the site has grown to over 500, with modern accommodations being finalised.

Global Atomic also reported strong performance at its zinc recycling plant in Türkiye, supported by favorable market conditions and steady steel production volumes. The facility continues to convert electric arc furnace dust into high-grade zinc concentrate for global smelters.

President and CEO Stephen Roman emphasised the company's commitment to Niger, noting that 98% of the workforce is local. He described Dasa as a transformative project for the region, poised to generate tax revenues and foreign exchange while contributing to local prosperity.

Global Atomic is advancing additional uranium exploration projects in Niger alongside its zinc operations in Türkiye. The company remains focused on meeting its development timelines and delivering long-term value.
