JSE-listed Gold Fields will continue operations at its Damang mine, in Ghana, following extensive engagements with the Ghanaian government, which had initially rejected the company’s application to extend its mining licence and ordered operations to cease by April 18.

Gold Fields confirmed on Thursday that it had secured a new 12-month mining lease, which enables it to safely restart mining activities at Damang.

The new mining lease is subject to ratification by Ghana’s Parliament on May 16.

Gold Fields said it would take all reasonable steps to restart openpit mining, preserve jobs and offer benefits to local communities.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources has committed to provide the necessary support to Gold Fields in obtaining the requisite permits to restart mining. Gold Fields will process surface stockpiles in the meantime.

The company said it also planned to finalise a detailed bankable feasibility study by the end of the year to extend the life-of-mine at Damang, including through an infill exploration drilling programme to improve mineral resource confidence at the mine.

Gold Fields stopped mining operations at Damang in 2023 and has since been processing stockpiled ore.

The mine has been in operation since 1997.
