Name of the Project
Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project.

Location
About 120 km offshore in a water depth of 2 850 m, off the shore of Mauritania, and in the Saint-Louis Profond block, off the shore of Senegal.

Project Owner/s
A partnership comprising bp, Petrosen, Société Mauritanienne des Hydrocarbures and Kosmos Energy.

Project Description
The GTA project was granted the status of National Project of Strategic Importance by the Presidents of Mauritania and Senegal in July 2021.

GTA Phase 1 is set to produce about 2.3-million tonnes a year of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The project will produce gas from reservoirs in deep water, about 120 km offshore, through a subsea system to a floating production and storage offloading (FPSO) vessel, which will initially process the gas, removing heavier hydrocarbon components.

The gas will then be transported by pipeline to the floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) vessel at the GTA hub where it will be cryogenically cooled in the vessel’s four liquefaction trains and stored before transfer to LNG carriers.

Phase 2 will evaluate a gravity-based structure (GBS) as the basis for the project, with a total capacity of between 2.5-million and three-million tonnes a year.

GBS LNG developments have a static connection to the seabed.

The concept design will include new wells and subsea equipment, integrating with and expanding on existing GTA infrastructure.

The partnership will consider powering LNG liquefication using electricity to lower operational emissions.

Potential Job Creation
GTA construction activities have generated more than 3 000 local jobs, and the project has engaged with about 300 local companies across Mauritania and Senegal. bp and partners have invested in local workforce development – including a four-year apprentice training programme – and started a multimillion-dollar social investment programme that aims to enhance local quality of life and create long-term opportunities for local development.

Capital Expenditure
Not stated.

Planned Start/End Date
Phase 2 is expected to be completed in 2027.

Latest Developments
bp has started flowing gas from wells at GTA Phase 1 to its FPSO vessel for the next stage of commissioning.

Gas from GTA Phase 1 is being introduced to the GTA FPSO about 40 km offshore, where water, condensate and impurities are removed. From there, it will be transferred by pipeline to an FLNG vessel located 10 km offshore, where it will be cryogenically cooled, liquefied and stored before being transferred to LNG carriers for export. Some of the gas will be allocated to help meet growing energy demand in the two host countries.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
None stated.
