Name of the Project
HNH Energy ammonia megaproject.

Location
Chilean Antarctic region.

Project Owner/s
HNH Energy, a joint venture between AustriaEnergy Group (24.5%), Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (51%) and Ökowind (24.5%).

Project Description
The project aims to produce ammonia from green hydrogen and nitrogen from the air, for subsequent sale on the international market.

Phase 1 includes a seawater desalination plant, one of the world’s biggest onshore wind farms comprising 194 turbines with a total capacity of 1.4 GW; a process plant for converting electrical energy into green hydrogen and, subsequently, into green ammonia; a green ammonia interim storage facility; and a multipurpose port with a sea terminal that will also be available to other market participants.

Every year, 270 000 t of hydrogen, converted into 1.3-million tons of ammonia, will be produced. When completed, the interim storage facility will have a storage capacity of 180 000 t/y, spread over three tanks.

Phase 2 will include an additional 2.1 GW wind farm to expand hydrogen and ammonia production capabilities.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
$11-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
If approved, construction will start in the first half of 2027 and operation in the second half of 2030.

The EIA for Phase 2 is expected to be submitted in the first quarter of 2026.
