HS2 high-speed rail line – lot C1.

Location
The rail line, located in the UK, will start from London and connect nonstop with Birmingham. It will then fork in the direction of Manchester and Leeds.

Project Owner/s
High Speed Two.

Project Description
The HS2 high-speed railway is the biggest transport infrastructure project in the UK.

The C1 section is a 21.6 km stretch from the north-west of London and includes a 3.4 km Colne Valley viaduct and the two Chilterns tunnels, each 15.75 km long.

Variable density tunnel boring machines will be used to adapt tunnelling to the specific geological conditions of the land.

The works include the construction of cross passages between the two tunnels as well as five ventilation shafts.

Potential Job Creation
More than 1 500 people will work on site at peak periods.

Capital Expenditure
The C1 section of the contract is valued at €1.8-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
Feasibility studies and preparatory engineering work started in 2017. The project was officially launched in April 2020 and will run for five-and-a-half years.

Latest Developments
A notice to proceed was issued to the Align joint venture in April 2020.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Align consortium, comprising Bouygues Travaux Publics, Sir Robert McAlpine and VolkerFitzpatrick (design and construction of the C1 section of the project).
