The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has tabled an information memorandum for the licensing of the International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) spectrum for public comment.

The memorandum aimed to provide guidance to prospective applicants surrounding the process and criteria for the licensing of the radio frequency spectrum licences within the 2.6 GHz, 800 MHz and 700 MHz bands for the provision of national broadband wireless access services.

The final IMT roadmap, which came into effect in November 2014, aimed to ensure universal availability of broadband services and promote investments and a vibrant and competitive telecommunications industry.

The roadmap had formed the basis for the development of the Radio Frequency Spectrum Plans for IMT Spectrum 2015.

“The publication of this information memorandum is important in that the authority views mobile telecommunication technologies as critical components in achieving the goal of broadband for all citizens in South Africa,” Icasa commented.

Interested stakeholders had until October 16 to provide their inputs.
