South Africa, September 2024 – In a historic achievement for the African construction industry, Inkulu Pipes has secured an unprecedented order to manufacture 744 meters of PE 100 DN/OD 1200 mm SDR 21 Solid Wall pipes. These large-diameter pipes, produced in 15-meter sections, will be used for an underground project utilizing the open-cut method, marking the first time such polyethylene pipes of this size have been manufactured on the continent. This milestone highlights Inkulu Pipes' commitment to driving innovation, efficiency, and quality in infrastructure solutions across Africa.

Unrivaled Manufacturing Capabilities

Inkulu Pipes, a non-SAPPMA member, has leveraged state-of-the-art technology and advanced welding equipment to produce these massive pipes, setting a new standard for the industry. The project involves a collaborative effort with key industry stakeholders, including House of Plumbing, BBT Construction, and JWater, with the City of Johannesburg as the primary client.

The success of this order is also rooted in Inkulu Pipes' long-standing relationship with Zhangjiagang City Yili Machinery Co., Ltd., a leading Chinese supplier of high-speed solid pipe extrusion lines. Yili Machinery has supplied Inkulu Pipes with cutting-edge equipment since its inception, culminating in the delivery of a 1200mm solid wall extruder—the largest of its kind ever supplied to the African market.

Technical Advancements and Industry Impact

The PE 100 DN/OD 1200 mm SDR 21 pipes are designed to meet rigorous demands for underground infrastructure projects. Key specifications include:

  • Material: PE 100 plus or RC (Resistant to Crack), providing enhanced durability.
  • Dimensions: 1200 mm outer diameter with a wall thickness of 45.9 mm.
  • Length: Produced in 15-meter sections for efficient handling and installation.
  • Pressure Rating: PN8, suited for high-pressure applications.
  • Joint Savings: Inkulu Pipes' 15-meter sections reduce the number of required joints by 60%, minimizing potential failure points and reducing installation costs.

A Groundbreaking Partnership with Yili Machinery

The 1200mm extruder supplied by Yili Machinery is the largest extrusion line deployed in Africa to date. This 70-meter-long machine weighing 95 metric tons is critical in enabling Inkulu Pipes to manufacture pipes of such a large diameter, making this project a reality. Commitment to Sustainability and Quality

Inkulu Pipes has a level 2 BEE rating and maintains the highest quality standards, evidenced by its ISO 9001 and ISO 14000 certifications. The company’s production processes comply with SANS ISO 4427, ensuring the pipes meet global safety, quality, and environmental standards.

Invitation to Collaborate

Inkulu Pipes invites industry professionals, including consulting engineers and contractors, to visit its manufacturing facility to witness the advanced production processes and quality control measures in place. This initiative aims to foster greater transparency and collaboration within the construction sector.
