King Fahd causeway upgrade, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain

9th September 2011

Font size: - +

Name and Location
King Fahd causeway upgrade, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

Project Description
The project involves the expansion and development of the existing King Fahd causeway, which links the States of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, across the Persian Gulf. The proposed expansion and development works include the addition of seven departure lanes to the existing ten, with the number of arrival lanes also increasing from 13 to 18 on both sides of the causeway.

The upgrade will also include the construction of a commercial centre, as well as a health centre on the Bahrain side.

A Saudi health centre is also planned for 2011.

A security checkpoint will be set up near the Bahrain entrance of the causeway, in addition to the one near the Saudi entrance, to efficiently control the opening and closures of the causeway with efficiency.

The project will also include expanded public utilities on both sides of the causeway, such as washrooms and mosques, which will be completed by the end of the year.

In addition, the two tower restaurants in both countries will be revamped through a separate project. The towers will be renovated without altering their historic appearance. The initial construction of the causeway started in 1982, and was opened to traffic four years later.

The causeway, which is a combination of several bridges and dams, is being hailed as one of the technical marvels of modern engineering.

The Saudi portion of the causeway begins at Al’Aziziyah, located south of Al Khobar city, and the Bahrain portion begins at Al Jasra, west of Manama city. It is 25 km long, 23 m wide, and was completed with the use of 350 000 m3 of concrete, 47 000 t of reinforced steel, 160 000 t of cement, 7 770 000 m3 of sand for embankments and 3 140 000 m3 of rock for embankments.

The causeway comprises five bridges and seven embankments.

The five bridges have a combined length of 12 430 m.

The road above the causeway runs in two opposite directions, each being 11.6 m wide, with two lanes and a curb for emergency parking.

There are 536 concrete columns beneath and along the causeway.

Value
The preliminary cost for the expansion and development is estimated at $284.8-million.

Duration
Studies for the expansion and development of the causeway were scheduled to be completed by March, with the project reaching completion in December 2015.

The expansion of the public utilities was completion by late 2010.

The Bahraini commercial centre was completed in the first quarter of 2011.
