TSX-V-listed Leading Edge Materials on Tuesday confirmed that its Norra Kärr heavy rare earth elements (HREE) project had not been included in the EU's first list of strategic projects under the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA).

The company plans to reapply once the next call for applications is announced in late 2025.

CEO Kurt Budge acknowledged the disappointment of not being selected but highlighted the substantial progress made since last August. He emphasised that the exclusion did not diminish the strategic importance of Norra Kärr, given the ongoing geopolitical tensions and fragile global trade flows.

He reiterated that Norra Kärr remained the most advanced HREE project in Europe and stressed its role in ensuring a secure supply of critical materials for Sweden and Europe.

The project’s redesigned framework prioritised environmental stewardship, including the protection of natural values and clean water access, while supporting the EU’s green transition.

Budge concluded that with Europe’s increasing demand for HREEs, accelerating the development of Norra Kärr was an urgent priority.
