Project Description
The project entails the construction of a 68 km railway line that links the Majuba power station to the main coal railway hub in Ermelo, Mpumalanga, and includes 96 culverts, nine cattle creeps, 32 agricultural underpasses and over-passes, 18 bridges, one service duct and 40 cattle grids.

Capital Expenditure
About $402-million, of which Eskom has contributed $132-million in financing. The World Bank loaned $270-million, which is currently in repayment.

Planned Start/End Date
Eskom aims to complete the project by the end of March 2024. It was initially expected to begin operations in 2016.

Latest Developments
The Majuba train line was 97.5% complete in 2021; however, as a result of vandalism and damage linked to copper cable theft, the project is now only 87% complete.
