Malmesbury solar plant to be doubled to 10 MW as companies sign up for green electricity
The 5.6 MW first phase of the SlimSun Too Solar development, located in Malmesbury in the Western Cape, is in its final commissioning stage and will soon begin supplying wheeled renewable electricity to businesses that have contracted with licensed trader Energy Exchange of Southern Africa (EXSA).
The R87-million project has been developed in partnership with independent power producer Sustainable Power Solutions (SPS), which has also acted as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor.
It will generate about 12-million kilowatt-hours yearly and EXSA’s ten-year power purchase agreement for all the electricity produced has proved crucial in advancing the project to financial close, with Investec having provided the finance.
EXSA, which secured its trading licence in 2022 and is backed by Remgro and Rand Merchant Bank, will sell the electricity to companies such as Woolworths, Mediclinic, the Delaire Graff Estate, as well as other commercial and industrial entities.
The solar plant has been developed on a 10 ha site and has secured an Eskom grid connection agreement that is large enough to accommodate an additional phase to double SlimSun Too's capacity to 10 MW.
Financial close on the second R87-million project has been achieved and construction is scheduled to begin in the coming months.
EXSA CEO Wayne Cowie says the project has demonstrated how partnerships can unlock innovative, cost-effective solutions in a rapidly evolving energy market, while SPS cofounder François van Themaat expressed excitement about the potential for further growth.
