Four sluice gates at the Vaal dam remain open after the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) closed two more on Tuesday.

The first gate was closed at 10:00 and the second gate at 12:00 to reduce water outflows at the dam as water inflows continue to decline.

This followed the closure of two gates on Monday.

The Vaal dam water levels have decreased from 103.54% to 102.65% with an inflow of 471.82 m³/s and an outflow of 729.94 m³/s, while the Barrage dam is currently discharging 915 mᵌ/s.

At Bloemhof dam, outflows will continue to be maintained at 1 400 m³/s.

The water levels of the Bloemhof dam increased from 102.27% to 103.04% owing to the inflows from upstream.

The current outflows at the Bloemhof dam may lead to overflowing riverbanks and floodplains.

The DWS continued to appeal to communities along the lower Vaal river and other riparian settlements to remain vigilant and monitor river levels closely.
