MTN powers, connects 94 Orange Farm households
Telecommunications group MTN South Africa has launched the Orange Farm microgrid project, an initiative that connects 94 households in the informal settlement’s Tjovitso section to the Internet, while providing reliable solar-powered electricity.
Launched in collaboration with local stakeholders, the project is designed to address two of the most pressing challenges facing underserved communities – energy poverty and digital exclusion – says MTN South Africa sustainability and broad-based black economic empowerment GM Keabetswe Mabe.
The integration of renewable energy with digital connectivity is pivotal to overcoming digital exclusion.
“Located in one of South Africa’s largest informal settlements, Orange Farm is home to thousands of people who struggle with limited access to infrastructure, the Internet and no electricity,” Mabe comments.
“For many people living in informal settlements like Orange Farm, the digital divide remains a significant barrier to progress. Without reliable access to electricity or the Internet, opportunities in education, business and even healthcare are severely limited.”
The microgrid, which powers both homes and local businesses, directly addresses this issue.
The project provides residents with access to the Internet, thereby enabling them to participate in online learning, engage with digital healthcare services and improve their quality of life.
“With access to stable power, the people of Orange Farm’s Tjovitso section are no longer constrained by limited offline options and can begin to experience the benefits of the global digital economy.”
Mabe highlights how students are now able to study using online resources, helping them to overcome the limitations of traditional classroom-based education, while adults can access job opportunities, vocational training and skills development programmes.
The initiative also fosters entrepreneurship by unlocking economic possibilities for local entrepreneurs and small businesses.
The initiative is powered by renewable solar energy, offering a solution to energy poverty and marking a significant step towards reducing the carbon footprint of the community.
The 94 households benefiting from the initiative use an average of 22 kilowatt-hours a month, with about 282 individuals positively impacted.
In January, carbon dioxide emissions totalling 900 kg were avoided.
“Our net-zero strategies align with our commitments to the Science-Based Targets initiative and the MTN Group Net Zero Philosophy,” Mabe continues.
“Our comprehensive approach focuses on reducing high-carbon energy consumption through initiatives such as the 14th Avenue Solar Plant, the integration of solar energy and the implementation of energy efficiency measures across our organisation.”
These efforts are delivering tangible benefits, including lower carbon emissions and cost savings.
The shift to clean energy reduces reliance on fossil fuels, which are not only costly but also contribute to pollution and climate change.
“As the project continues to evolve and expand, it offers a model for other companies and organisations to follow in bridging the digital divide across South Africa,” Mabe concludes.
