Project Owner/s
Multinational energy company Equinor has a 45% stake in the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) with the remaining 45% owned by oil and gas company bp, and 10% by energy and petroleum company TotalEnergies, which also owns a 25% stake in the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) Power project. The remaining 75% is owned by bp, which also provides operator services for both projects.
Project Description
The projects entail the development of the UK’s first carbon capture, transport and storage infrastructure. It includes a c gathering network and onshore compression facilities, as well as a 145 km offshore pipeline, and subsea injection and monitoring facilities for the Endurance saline aquifer located about 1 000 m below the seabed.
The development could transport and store up to four-million tonnes of captured CO2 emissions a year from three Teesside projects, increasing to an average of about 23-million tonnes by 2035 with the future expansion of the East Coast Cluster.
Potential Job Creation
The projects will result in thousands of jobs and wider socioeconomic benefits to the north-east of England.
Capital Expenditure
Building work for both projects is valued at about £4-billion.
Planned Start/End Date
A final investment decision was made in December 2024. Construction is expected to start from mid-2025, with startup in 2028.
