New coating technology to benefit farmers

14th June 2004

Font size: - +

Coatings company Flame Spray Technologies has introduced a new technology to South Africa, which can significantly lengthen the life of agricultural implements, such as ploughshares and sweeps, by ten to 15 times.

This is achieved by spraying a thin coat of a hard nickel-based stainless alloy onto the cutting edge of implements.

The technique is popular in Europe and Israel – a country renowned for its advanced agricultural practices.

Flame Spray Technologies’ marketing director, Howard Shaw, said the technique can be performed in-house, through cooperative workshops or large farms, and that the procedure is simple and inexpensive.

“The return on investment for this process is astronomical,” he stated.

He added that the best results are attained when the implement is coated when new.

The coating is also corrosion resistant and is, therefore, particularly useful in coastal areas.

In the agricultural industry, the internal wearing parts of irrigation pumps are being coated with a carbide or ceramic coating. This has been particularly successful in pumps used to extract irrigation water from rivers.

“The coating can extend the life of the wear parts of pumps up to twenty times, making it a popular procedure globally,” said Shaw.
