Manufacturer of glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) products GFRP Tech has launched a range of rebar products which it says offers a sustainable alternative to traditional steel rebar used in construction projects.

Manufactured at the company’s new facility in Linbro Park, Johannesburg, EnviraBar consists of a polymer matrix reinforced with fibres and, unlike steel, it is corrosion-proof and boasts higher tensile strength, ensuring long-term structural integrity, and reducing maintenance needs and the risk of environmental contamination.

GFRP Tech CEO Allen Fiford asserts that the product holds key benefits over traditional steel rebar, one of which is its lighter weight. Fiford notes that, at a reduction of almost 75% in weight, EnviraBar is more cost-effective to transport and easier for construction workers to work with on-site.

Offering tensile strengths exceeding 1 500 MPa, the rebar is available in diameters ranging from 6 mm to 30 mm, catering to diverse construction needs, from airport runways, to marine ports and harbours, roads and buildings. The manufacturing and transportation of the lighter rebar is said to result in a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to steel, contributing to more environment-friendly construction.
