UIF COVID-19 TERS TO BE EXTENDED
The president announced at last night’s State of the Nation Address that the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme (TERS) will be extended beyond the 15th of October 2020.
The granular details regarding the extension are still to be discussed by the UIF and its social partners. It is, however, envisaged that the scheme will be for employees who are in sectors that are not yet fully operational such as hospitality, tourism as well as the liquor and related sectors. The UIF is also considering supporting vulnerable workers over 60 years of age or with co-morbidities who can’t work from home.
The fund has paid close to R60 billion in TERS payments and will continue to process and pay valid outstanding claims that are already in the system.
