South Africa’s scientific research funding, facilities and skills development agency, the National Research Foundation (NRF), has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre for South-South Cooperation (ISTIC), an agency of Unesco. The MoU was signed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, by NRF executive director: international grants and partnerships Dr Nare Prudence Makhura, and ISTIC governing board chair Professor Dr Mohd Basyaruddin Abd Rahman.

The MoU is intended to strengthen science, technology and innovation collaboration between the two parties, thereby deepening South-South cooperation. Focus areas under the agreement are AI, climate change, health, and water, among others that are in line with national and global priorities.

“Through this MoU, we hope to foster not only research collaboration but also stronger people-to-people connections between our institutions and communities of scientists,” affirmed NRF manager: international grants and partnerships and Future Earth Africa Hub and Leadership Centre director Michael Nxumalo. “We look forward to nurturing a robust ecosystem of innovation and excellence.”

This development has created a strategic partnership which will promote collaborative research and improve capacity-building for researchers in the early and middle phases of their careers. It will also facilitate the exchange of innovation, knowledge and scientific expertise.

“This partnership reaffirms our shared commitment to advancing inclusive and sustainable development through science, technology and innovation,” highlighted ISTIC director Tengku Sharizad Tengku Dahlan. “Together, ISTIC and NRF will create opportunities for co-creation, knowledge exchange, and impactful joint initiatives across the Global South.”
