Name of the Project
Overberg Wind Farm.

Location
Near Swellendam in the Western Cape, South Africa.

Project Owner/s

Project Description
The 380 MW Overberg Wind Farm will feature thirty-nine 6.2 MW turbines, delivering a total installed capacity of 242 MW.

The wind farm will be developed in two phases, with heavy mineral sands extractor and refiner Richards Bay Minerals (RBM), a subsidiary of Rio Tinto Group, securing the first 230 MW.

This will deliver an estimated 750 GWh/y of clean energy to RBM. The project is expected to cut RBM’s yearly greenhouse-gas emissions by an estimated 30%, which translates to 700 000 t of CO2 equivalent.

Once fully operational, the Overberg Wind Farm will be South Africa’s biggest privately developed wind farm, significantly contributing to the country’s energy security.
