State-owned Petroleum Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa (PetroSA) has confirmed it safely contained and extinguished a fire at its gas-to-liquids refinery in Mossel Bay, with no sustained injuries having been reported.

The fire broke out at about 18:00 on March 14, and the PetroSA team, together with the Mossel Bay and Garden Route fire authorities, managed to extinguish the fire by 23:15.

PetroSA has not yet confirmed the cause of the fire, with investigations still under way.

The company says emergency measures remain in place on site to ensure continued safety.

The refinery had not been in use since November 2020, when it stopped producing synthetic fuels from offshore gas at a rate of 45 000 bbl/d.

PetroSA has subsequently taken steps to restart the refinery through a strategic partnership with Russian company Gazprombank-Africa.
