Australian lithium company Pilbara Minerals on Wednesday announced it would pause construction of the Mid-Stream demonstration plant project at the Pilgangoora operation, citing current market conditions.

The project, developed in a joint venture (JV) with environmental technology company Calix, remains on budget and is 60% complete to the end of September.

Construction works in progress will be completed after which the project will be paused until market conditions are supportive or further government support for project continuation can be secured.

“Given the current lithium price environment, this pause enables the JV to time expenditure with improved market conditions. We remain fully supportive of the midstream strategy and our JV, recognising the project’s potential to transform the lithium supply chain through lower emissions and value-added processing,” said Pilbara MD and CEO Dale Henderson.

In a joint statement, Calix and Pilbara stated that they both remained committed to progressing the demonstration plant and continue engaging with various government bodies in relation to further funding options.

Calix CEO and MD Phil Hodgson stated that the progress to date meant that the project could rapidly restart and progress to the commissioning phase once conditions allowed.

The demonstration plant will aim to produce lithium salts through a midstream “value-added” refining process using Calix’s patented calcination technology. The plant will seek to deliver superior value-added lithium product enabling lower product cost, reduced carbon energy intensity and reduced waste product.
