Project Description
The project will directly address the mounting crisis facing the Durban–Gauteng freight corridor, where rail currently moves less than 14% of volumes – far below the National Development Plan’s 50% target.
The port will feature two 2.2 km flat rail alignments designed for efficient container handling, along with integrated solar power, rainwater harvesting and advanced recycling systems.
The planned facility will include world-class car and container rail terminals, allowing for rapid, high-volume throughput and seamless train-to-truck transfers.
Potential Job Creation
The project is expected to create more than 50 000 permanent employment opportunities.

About R50-billion.
Planned Start/End Date
Construction is expected to start in 2027.

Port of Gauteng released a detailed White Paper on the proposed development at the start of Transport Month in October 2025.
