Project Description
The life span of a coach is about 40 years; however, the majority of PRASA’s fleet is more than 50 years old.
In the asset life cycle of trains, individual coaches require general maintenance every nine to ten years.
PRASA has awarded several contracts for the maintenance and repair of its existing train sets while clearing the backlog in rolling stock repair and refurbishment. The contracts will result in about 380 to 400 coaches undergoing heavy maintenance and rehabilitation work every year for the next five years.

The work packages are expected to create about 2 000 jobs.
Capital Expenditure
The contracts are valued at R7.5-billion.
Planned Start/End Date
The maintenance and repair of the trains are expected to be conducted over five years.
