RCL recalls dry pet food after stolen contaminated product reaches the market
JSE-listed food manufacturer RCL Foods has announced a recall of certain dry pet food product lines following the theft of batches of the food, which was being resold in the market illegally.
RCL had sent condemned dry pet food to a waste management facility in eastern Gauteng for destruction after detecting traces of Salmonella in certain batches in November last year, but the products were instead resold in the informal market and to some extent the formal market.
The group has, therefore, decided to initiate a countrywide recall of limited batches of Bobtail, Bonzo, Catmor, Canine Cuisine, Feline Cuisine, Optimizor and Ultra Pet dog good manufactured at one of RCL’s pet foot plants.
RCL says it is working closely with retailers, regulators and relevant authorities to identify and remove all affected products from the market, while the affected plant had already been thoroughly cleaned, sanitised and verified to be free of contamination.
In addition to the group investigating the theft of the condemned product from the waste management facility, RCL has asked independent experts to determine how product that had been marked for destruction entered the formal market.
Preliminary internal assessments have found that some product was erroneously released to the formal trade.
RCL’s primary concern is the health and wellbeing of shoppers and their pets and it is, therefore, employing all possible efforts to recall, remove and replace all potentially affected products from circulation.
The group warns that, if pets show any signs of illness after consuming dry pet food, pet owners should consult their veterinarian promptly.
The products that are being recalled have various best before dates that can be found here.
