Rio Grande LNG – Train 4, US

Name of the Project
Rio Grande LNG (RGLNG) – Train 4.
Location
Near Brownsville, Texas, in the US.
Project Owner/s
Low-carbon energy-focused company NextDecade Corporation, and partners Global Infrastructure Partners, part of BlackRock; GIC; Mubadala Investment Company; and TotalEnergies.
Project Description
NextDecade is building the first four liquefaction trains at the RGLNG. The facility has an estimated 48-million tonnes a year of potential liquefaction capacity under construction or in development. Trains 1 to 4 are under construction.
Train 4 has expected liquefied natural gas (LNG) production capacity of about six-million tonnes a year, bringing the total expected LNG production capacity under construction to about 24-million tonnes a year.
Train 5 is commercialised, and trains 6 to 8 are in development and beginning the permitting process. Sufficient space exists at the site for development of up to ten liquefaction trains, making the RGLNG potentially one of the biggest LNG production and export facilities in the world.
Potential Job Creation
More than 5 000 construction and trades workers will be on site during peak construction. NextDecade will maintain 350 to 400 long-term jobs.
Capital Expenditure
RGLNG trains 1 to 4 have an expected investment of $25-billion.
Planned Start/End Date
Train 1 is scheduled to be operational in late 2027, Train 2 in mid-2028, Train 3 in early 2029 and Train 4 in the second half of 2030.
Latest Developments
NextDecade made a final investment decision on the project in September 2025. NextDecade has announced a final investment decision and construction on Train 5.
