Aim-listed Rome Resources has advised that its on-site activities, including drilling on the Mont Agoma and Kalayi base metal projects, in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), remain unaffected by conflicts developing in the nearby city of Goma.

The M23 rebel group on January 27 claimed to have seized Goma, a key city in the North Kivu province of DRC, in a coup d’etat. The city’s capture followed a 48-hour deadline imposed by the group for the Congolese army to surrender their weapons.

The DRC has been plagued by conflict for more than 30 years since the 1994 Rwandan genocide, with numerous armed groups competing with the central authorities for power and control.

Fighting over the weekend resulted in the death of nine South African soldiers operating in the DRC as part of UN peacekeeping efforts.

Rome has, meanwhile, as a precautionary measure, relocated its field operations and helicopter support to Bukavu, which is located 200 km away from Goma, in the South Kivu province.

“Our exploration programme is progressing steadily across our licences and we remain committed to advancing our projects in a safe and responsible manner. We are closely monitoring the situation in Goma,” CEO Paul Barrett confirms.

The company is in the process of reviewing drill results from a number of holes at Kalayi, with an update expected in the coming days.
