Name of the Project
Rooppur nuclear power plant (NPP).
Location
Ishwardi Upazilla, 160 km from Dhaka, in Bangladesh.
Project Owner/s
Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC).
Project Description
The Rooppur NPP will comprise two VVER-1200 reactors with a total capacity of 2 400 MW.
Potential Job Creation
Not stated.
Capital Expenditure
$12.65-billion.
Planned Start/End Date
Unit 1 is scheduled for completion in 2024 and Unit 2 in 2025.
Latest Developments
Rosatom has reported that the reactor assembly of the first unit has been completed.
The reactor assembly process included installing of reactor internals, such as a shaft and a baffle, loading of fuel assembly simulators, installing of a protective pipes unit and an upper unit, SAMS sensors. The hydraulic testing is to be conducted at the next stage, to check operability of the reactor plant equipment.
In September 2024, loading of dummy fuel assemblies into the reactor pressure vessel started at Unit 1. A dummy fuel assembly is a piece of equipment fully imitating the design of standard fuel assemblies in terms of dimensions, weight and materials, but without nuclear fuel. As part of the simulation area, they are designed to model the geometry of the reactor core and to confirm hydraulic parameters of the reactor plant during circulation flushing and reactor cold and hot tests. Dummy fuel assemblies are also necessary to master handling operations using the refuelling machine. After confirmation of all parameters of the reactor plant with the aid of dummy assemblies, nuclear fuel loading will follow.
The circulation flushing and reactor cold and hot tests are the most important step of start-up and adjustment works, preceding physical start-up of the power unit to confirm its reliable and safe operation.
The next stage is hydraulic testing.
