SABS certification creates prized opportunity for high quality valve

23rd July 2010

Font size: - +

Gauteng-based VAG-Valves South Africa recently obtained certification from the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) for its range of SABS 664 resilient seal (RS) valves.

This category of RS valves is most commonly used in water pipelines and water distribution by the water supply boards around the country.

"The certification opens the door for us to supply SABS 664 RS valves into this key sector of the market," says VAG-Valves customer service centre manager Robin Louwrier.

"The water boards are by far the largest end-users of this category of valves and most boards specify that they must carry SABS certification."

The certification, which the company obtained in early April this year after an audit and tests conducted by the SABS, is SANS 664-1:2009 and SANS 664-3:2009. The certification applies to the full range of SABS 664 RS valves offered by VAG-Valves, which are between 50 mm to 300 mm in diameter.

"We are looking to gain a major share of this market within the next three years, as our SABS 664 RS valves, like the rest of the lines we offer, are high-quality, reliable, long-lasting products that are also competitively priced. It is worth noting that our product is the only one among the lot that has SABS certification without any exclusions," Louwrier states.

The company, a subsidiary of the Germany-based VAG Group, also supplies standard RS valves (Category EN558-1 and EN1171) of between 50 mm and 600 mm diameter, the main applications of which are in drinking water, water treatment and sewerage systems.

All the company's valves are manufactured and supplied by its principal. Its other lines are large engineered control valves for dams, butterfly valves, air valves, non-return valves and
knife and sluice-gate valves.

Growth in sales of VAG valves began to take off after the local subsidiary was established three years ago and took over marketing, sales and supply of the product from a local distributor.

"Our success in getting our message through to the market about the high quality combined with affordability of our product began to pay off for the first time last year when we were inundated with orders. The result was that our sales last year increased drastically," Louwrier comments.

These successes included large orders for butterfly valves, control valves and air valves for several major projects, including Mooihoek bulk water supply, Empangeni bulk water supply and the Davel reservoir.

"We are experiencing continued healthy growth this year, to which higher sales of our 664 RS valves, now that they carry SABS certification, are expected to make a significant contribution," Louwrier concludes.
