The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) Business Confidence Index (BCI) decreased to 120 index points in January, from 121 in December, but indicates an improved business climate, the chamber notes.

The BCI increased from a low level of 107.8 in May 2024 to 121 in December before the slight decrease in January.

The 120-level reading for January this year was also 7.7 index points higher than in January 2024.

Only one of the BCI’s 14 subindices – merchandise export volumes – had a notable negative month-on-month effect on the January BCI.

Greater volumes of imported merchandise, more vehicles sold and rising inward tourism had a noteworthy positive impact on the BCI in the month. Lower inflation and an overall increase in retail sales volumes were positive contributors to the month’s BCI.

However, there remains uncertainty on the challenges the world could face on the back of US President Donald Trump’s re-election, as his approach toward international political and economic affairs could cause volatility in markets and with trade relationships between countries.

Locally, Sacci says, the goodwill towards South Africa in rectifying and addressing pressing problems is being acknowledged, with investor confidence steadily improving.

“Although many challenges persist, all South Africans should be able to benefit from a bigger and better performing economy,” Sacci states.
