Earlier this year, in a landmark move for Zambia’s mining sector, LONGi, a global leader in solar technology, delivered its high-efficiency Hi-MO 9 modules for the FITULA solar PV plant, which will power a major Chinese copper industry player’s mining operation in Zambia. This project was signed in June, in Shanghai, China, marks a significant shift, for the mining company, from fossil fuel dependency to clean, reliable solar energy.

The project is located in Chingola, Copperbelt Province, Zambia, and designed with AC capacity of 10 MWp, a DC capacity of approximately 12 MWp, covering an area of approximately 12.41 hectares. LONGi has provided the solution, equipped with 640Wp high-efficiency half-cut BC bifacial monocrystalline silicon solar modules.

Technical Advantage: BC Technology Redefines Solar Efficiency:

  • Unmatched Efficiency: With a conversion efficiency of 23.7%, the modules will maximize energy output even in Zambia’s high-irradiation conditions.
  • Superior Durability: Designed for harsh environments, the modules ensure long-term reliability, critical for uninterrupted mining operations.
  • Lower LCOE (Levelized Cost of Energy): By reducing reliance on expensive diesel generators, the project cuts energy costs while slashing carbon emissions.

The modules for the project have already been delivered and ready for the power plant installation. The commission and commercial operation, scheduled later this year, will generate the green power of 22, 836 MWH per year, setting a new benchmark for solar performance in mining applications.

This transition to solar aligns with Zambia’s push for sustainable mining, where energy costs and environmental impact are key concerns.

A Pioneer Project with Strategic Importance

Located in a region with rich resource of copper, cobalt, selenium, uranium, gold and silver, the FITULA solar PV plant’s successful commission & operation will be more than just an energy solution, it’s a model for Zambia’s mining future. The Zambian government has actively encouraged mining operators to develop dedicated power plants to stabilize electricity supply and reduce grid dependence.

Why This Matters for Zambia

1. Energy Security: Solar reduces mining operators’ exposure to grid instability and fuel price volatility.

2. Economic & Environmental Benefits: Lower operational costs and decarbonized operations enhance sustainability compliance.

3. Government Alignment: The project supports Zambia’s vision for renewable-powered mining, setting a replicable blueprint.

The Road Ahead

As Zambia’s mining sector expands, LONGi’s BC technology positions solar as the go-to energy solution for cost-effective, clean power. The FITULA solar PV project is just the beginning, more mining players are expected to follow, accelerating Zambia’s green industrial transformation.

With this milestone, LONGi reaffirms its role as a technology enabler and sustainability partner for Zambia’s mining-driven economy. The future of mining is solar, and LONGi is leading the charge.
