Globally diversified mining and metals company South32 Metalloys has handed over a newly-built sustainable facility to the Kotulong Community Centre (KCC), a nongovernment organisation that takes care of vulnerable children in Meyerton, Gauteng.

The R45-million facility, set to benefit the community of De Deur and surrounding communities south of Johannesburg, aligns with the company’s purpose to make a difference by improving people's lives now and for generations to come.

The centre is 80% powered by solar energy and equipped with green technology, including floor insulation and double-glazed windows, as well as a calcamite sewage system designed to kill bacteria.

It also includes a borehole capable of providing 7 200 litres of water hourly, which goes through a high-standard chlorination system to ensure a continuous provision of affordable and clean water.

It contains seven four-bedroom units, a kitchen, a laundry, an administration block, a library and a social worker unit.

The centre has historically been located within the premises of the company’s operation since 2004.

The decision to invest in the construction of a new facility away from the operation follows extensive consultation and engagement with the Department of Social Development as well as  the KCC management and board.

The facility was built by a local company and 50 temporary jobs were created for local residents.
