Name of the Project
Stellantis automotive manufacturing facility.

Location
Coega Special Economic Zone, near Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape, in South Africa.

Project Owner/s
Stellantis, together with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic).

Stellantis South Africa (SA) will operate and manage the plant.

Project Description
The project will result in the construction of a state-of-the-art greenfield automotive manufacturing facility.

The first launch, planned in early 2026, is the Peugeot Landtrek one-ton bakkie. Volumes are expected to reach up to 50 000 completely knocked-down units a year, including export, in line with the Automotive Production Development Programme.

The Eastern Cape facility will include a body shop, a paint shop and assembly area totalling more than 50 000 m2. The body shop will not be fully automated.

The plant has the potential to be expanded to 90 000 units a year.

Potential Job Creation
The project is expected to create 1 000 jobs. Local content on the bakkie will start at 30%-plus, “progressing over time”, Stellantis CEO Mike Whitfield has said.

Capital Expenditure
R3-billion. The contributions of the IDC and dtic are still a work in progress.

Planned Start/End Date
The start of assembly is scheduled for the beginning of 2026.

Latest Developments
Stellantis has reported that July will be a critical point for the project with regard to the award of major contracts. The order for the paint shop equipment will be placed followed by general assembly equipment.

On the construction side, the order for the bulk earthworks will be placed imminently, which will allow for Stellantis to start clearing and levelling the ground in readiness for the foundations and infrastructure to be laid.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
None stated.
