SAWEM School opens as ‘launchpad’ into competitive electricity market
The National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA) has announced the launch of a flagship and mandatory educational programme for those seeking accreditation to participate in the South African Wholesale Electricity Market (SAWEM), which is due to become operational in April next year.
Known as the SAWEM School, the three-day-a-month programme kicks off in July, and combines theoretical insight with real-world simulations to prepare independent power producers, aggregators, traders, large customers and other stakeholders for participation in a more open electricity market.
Describing the programme as a “launchpad into the competitive electricity market”, NTCSA senior manager for market operations Keith Bowen says the school aims to build knowledgeable, and compliant and empowered market participants.
The school will expose participants to the future market structure, including the roles and responsibilities of each participant, and provide hands-on guidance on mechanisms such as gate closure, dispatch, and system balancing.
The course will also offer insights into financial settlement processes, credit management, and risk mitigation, and include expert-led case studies and simulations that reflect real-world market scenarios.
Bowen says certification from the SAWEM School will be a prerequisite for market entry.
“That means any individual or entity intending to trade or operate within the market - whether generating, buying, or selling electricity - must first pass through the SAWEM School.”
