Stellantis powers rhino protection with vehicle donation
Rhinos have roamed the Earth for over 55-million years, however, owing to poaching and habitat loss, they are now critically endangered. In response to this urgent conservation crisis, automaker Stellantis has provided a crucial boost to Project Rhino by donating a Peugeot LandTrek to support the organisation's conservation work in KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.
Project Rhino plays an essential role in preserving the remaining black and white rhino populations in South Africa, many of which reside in KwaZulu-Natal. The organisation’s efforts span nearly 40 reserves, stretching into neighbouring Eastern Cape, where it collaborates with conservation partners to protect the rhinos.
Speaking about Stellantis’ support for the cause, Stellantis South Africa MD Mike Whitfield says: “Supporting Project Rhino aligns with our values of sustainability and social responsibility. As a local business, we committed to making a tangible difference in the communities and ecosystems that need it most – to ensure the best possible future for our country. The fight to protect Africa’s rhinos is one that demands collaboration, and we are proud to stand with Grant Fowlds and the Project Rhino team in this critical work.”
The donated Peugeot LandTrek is now an integral tool for Grant Fowlds, a well-known conservationist and Project Rhino ambassador, who travels extensively across reserves. His team covers up to 8 000 km each month, providing support to anti-poaching units, delivering vital supplies and engaging with local communities.
“As a conservationist, my work demands extensive travel,” says Fowlds. “Having a reliable vehicle allows us to cover more ground, reach remote areas, and strengthen our relationships with local communities. The Peugeot LandTrek is far more than just a vehicle—it’s a lifeline in our fight to protect rhinos.”
Fowlds relies on the vehicle for everything from delivering supplies to attending community meetings and engaging in educational initiatives. The Peugeot LandTrek’s reliability and ruggedness make it an “invaluable asset” in the field.
Despite the challenges posed by poaching and habitat loss, Fowlds remains optimistic. “The work we’re doing in the field is making a real difference. It’s not always visible, but every effort counts in preserving our natural heritage for future generations,” he says. “We must keep going, because the rhino’s survival depends on it.”
Fowlds encourages businesses, conservation enthusiasts and the public to continue supporting conservation initiatives, whether through funding, advocacy or raising awareness. “This isn’t just about saving rhinos—it’s about protecting our shared heritage,” he adds.
With Stellantis’ ongoing support, Project Rhino is better equipped to continue its essential work, safeguarding one of the planet’s most iconic species and ensuring that future generations will continue to experience the wonder of these incredible animals.
