UK's Prince Edward to meet Mashatile, conservation activists
The Duke of Edinburgh Prince Edward will meet with Deputy President Paul Mashatile at the OR Tambo Official Residence, in Pretoria, as part of Prince Edward's working visit to South Africa from January 22 to 24.
The delegations will discuss key areas of importance in the bilateral relationship between the countries.
The Duke will also meet stakeholders from the World Wide Fund for Nature South Africa, the Endangered Wildlife Trust, GreenMatterZA, TRAFFIC, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Birdlife and Conservation South Africa during his visit.
"The visit is indicative of the strong bilateral relationship that the UK and South Africa share," Mashatile's office said on January 19.
Prince Edward will also meet Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Minister Barbara Creecy for a tour of the Pretoria National Botanical Garden and will be accompanied on the tour by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (Sanbi) CEO Shonisani Munzhedi.
This visit follows that of President Cyril Ramaphosa to the Royal Botanical Garden, in Kew, in the UK, in November 2022, and will mark the long-term collaboration between Kew and Sanbi to ensure the survival of South Africa’s rich plant diversity.
Further, the Duke will also meet Higher Education, Science and Innovation Minister Dr Blade Nzimande at a dinner marking the deep partnership between South Africa and the UK in the field of science and innovation.
The Duke of Edinburgh will also meet recipients of the President’s Awards, which is the international arm of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards and of which President Ramaphosa is a patron. Both countries share a strong commitment to youth development and empowerment, Mashatile's office said.
