US-based metallurgical coal miner Corsa Coal has announced promising results from its investigation into the presence of valuable minerals in its coal refuse material.

While the TSX-V-listed company initially explored the economic potential of extracting rare earth elements (REEs) from its waste, the findings indicated limited viability for REE extraction.

However, further analysis revealed the presence of platinum group metals (PGMs), which are highly sought after for use in catalytic converters, electronics, and renewable technologies.

In response to this discovery, Corsa Coal has partnered with a South African mineral research organisation to explore the feasibility of commercial-scale PGM extraction. The company sent a sample of its coal refuse to the organisation, where a series of tests, including particle size distribution and multiple acid digestion techniques, were conducted.

Preliminary results suggest that the PGM concentration in the coal refuse could be economically significant.

Corsa Coal says it plans to conduct further tests to validate these findings, including additional third-party analysis and detailed mineralogical studies to identify which minerals contain the PGMs. The company will also explore suitable methods for physically separating and extracting the metals.

The next phase of the investigation aims to determine whether a viable, large-scale PGM extraction process can be developed, potentially unlocking a new revenue stream and enhancing the value of Corsa’s coal refuse material.
