With the agriculture sector focused on broadening international market access for produce, fresh produce supplier Westfalia Fruit has achieved a significant milestone by expanding its footprint into another major Asian market – Japan.

Westfalia has managed to position South African avocados as premium produce in the countries of Japan, India and China, with an agreement between South Africa and Japan having paved the way for exports to this nation.

It follows on another successful shipment of avocados to India earlier this year, with the finalisation of a phytosanitary agreement between South Africa and India having marked the culmination of many years of work to access this lucrative market.

Westfalia last year reached an agreement with China that extends beyond avocados to other fruits.

“The expansion into these diverse Asian markets represents significant and lasting growth opportunities for our growers,” says Westfalia COO Graham Young.

He adds that that these market openings present Westfalia with the chance to showcase the unique flavour profiles and exceptional quality of South African avocados.

Young is confident these agreements will form the basis for more collaboration between public and private sector stakeholders and building relationships that can benefit the broader agriculture sector through knowledge exchange and innovation.
