INEQUALITY CRISIS: Despite geopolitical resistance, President Cyril Ramaphosa has sought to use South Africa’s G20 presidency to place the threat posed by inequality on to the global agenda. A taskforce established by Ramaphosa, and led by Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, has called for the creation of an international panel to tackle inequality, warning that extreme wealth disparities disrupt democracy and cause economic instability. “The world understands that we have a climate emergency; it’s time we recognise that we face an inequality emergency too,” Stiglitz asserts.
