Engineering stability requires reliable NECRTs to protect South Africa’s power network

As South Africa’s power network evolves, new generation sources, industrial loads and renewable projects continue to add complexity to an already strained system. Maintaining stability during faults has become one of the grid’s most pressing operational challenges. While much of the attention often falls on visible infrastructure, a critical part of grid protection lies in the neutral, where Neutral Earthing Compensator Resister Transformers (NECRTs) quietly shape earth‑fault management of delta configured power transformers.

In this environment, Southern Africa’s largest NECRT manufacturer ACTOM Distribution Transformers (ADT) stands at the centre of stability, playing a decisive role as one of the few companies capable of delivering fully engineered, locally produced solutions at an industrial scale. From the outset, ADT's commitment to reliable NECRT equipment has been fundamental in supporting South Africa’s increasingly complex power system.

Reliable neutral earthing underpins safety and equipment protection, and ADT leads the way with decades of engineering expertise, in-house testing and a strong national presence. Its locally engineered NECRTs give engineers confidence and set the company apart from other, less consistent competitors. Standards compliance is another area where ADT’s leadership is clear.

Proven Compliance and Engineering Confidence

All ADT NECRT’s are aligned with State-owned power utility Eskom, International Electrotechnical Commission and South African National Standards specifications, a hierarchy that reflects how engineering decisions are made in the field. Ensuring repeatable compliance across high‑volume production is a significant technical undertaking and one that positions ADT as a trusted supplier to Eskom, most engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors, and major industrial customers. This commitment to rigorous compliance reduces risk, shortens commissioning timelines and supports protection systems that must operate precisely during fault events.

According to ADT divisional CEO Lee Mbenge, engineers are increasingly prioritising reliability that is proven in the field, not just in the factory. He notes that ADT’s long  record with utilities and EPCs, supported by repeatable quality and lifecycle support, is what continues to build trust among system designers and operators.

Local Manufacturing as a Strategic Advantage

Mbenge highlights that ADT’s NECRTs are not just components but part of a broader strategy to strengthen South African manufacturing capability and ensure critical protection equipment is produced, supported and maintained locally. This reinforces ADT’s position as the preferred choice for organisations requiring NECRTs that deliver stable, predictable performance across diverse applications.

Local design and manufacturing remain one of ADT’s strongest advantages. As a proudly South African NECRT manufacturer, ADT delivers full end‑to‑end capability, from design engineering and in‑house routine, type and special testing to maintenance and field support. Their extensive manufacturing footprint, the largest in Southern Africa, ensures faster turnaround times, improved supply continuity and the assurance that every unit meets the highest quality and performance standards. For asset owners, these advantages translate into reduced operational risk and quicker troubleshooting.

As demands on the national grid continue to rise, the importance of reliable NECRTs will only intensify. These devices may operate out of sight, but they remain central to modern protection strategies. By prioritising proven engineering, strict compliance and strong local capability, ADT continues to reinforce grid resilience where it matters most – at the “neutral point”.
