State-owned Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has expanded the flight network at King Shaka International Airport (KSIA) with flights to Gaborone, Harare and Lusaka.

The newly introduced Durban–Gaborone route operates three times a week and strengthens travel connectivity within the Southern African region.

Additionally, the Durban–Lusaka route has been expanded to twice a week, while the Durban–Harare route now operates seven times a week, thereby providing greater convenience and enhanced travel options for passengers.

These developments reflect the airport’s commitment to facilitating travel and trade opportunities across the continent, ACSA said on November 22.

KSIA plays a vital role in connecting Durban to global markets, and the Durban–Dubai route remains a cornerstone of the airport, operating seven times a week and catering to business and leisure travellers.

The key Durban–Johannesburg and Durban–Cape Town routes support local connectivity, and recent adjustments in flight frequencies reflect ongoing efforts to optimise capacity and improve operational efficiency.

"KSIA is committed to expanding its route network and exploring opportunities to enhance air connectivity, especially in Africa. Strategic partnerships with airlines and stakeholders will continue to underpin its efforts," ACSA said.

"These new routes and expanded frequencies are part of hard work to recover and grow air connectivity. They are part of the airport’s efforts to rebuild and strengthen its passenger volumes and flight offerings following the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic," said ACSA Cluster 3 regional GM Nkosinathi Myataza.

KSIA saw international traffic growth of 2.6% year-on-year in 2024, and the airport saw an overall 79% recovery compared to pre-Covid-19 levels. International travel is serving as a primary driver of recovery, he said.
