The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) announced on Tuesday that it had terminated a contract with French technology company IDEMIA. No reason was given for the ending of the contract.

The contract covered an Automated Border Control, e-Gates and single token project initiated by ACSA. The State-owned airports company assured that this digital technology and biometrics project remained essential to its short- to medium-term strategy, to create a seamless and efficient experience for passengers passing through its airports, to their next destinations. It was ACSA’s intention to resume the project in the near future.

“The contract termination is in line with the conditions of the Service Level Agreement which allows for a 60-day notice period, that will allow IDEMIA to conclude the work currently under way,” stated the airports company. “ACSA remains committed to the best interests of good corporate governance, transparency, and fairness as we continue with an independent investigation.”

ACSA did not say what was being investigated, nor why.

IDEMIA is a major multinational group operating in the areas of secure transactions, public security and smart identity technologies, with particular focus on encryption and biometrics. Its revenues totalled more than €3-billion last year. It has 15 000 employees, drawn from 80 nationalities, around the world.
