Arizona Sonoran secures additional land for Cactus copper project plan

Toronto-listed Arizona Sonoran Copper has acquired 859.3 ha of private land adjacent to its Cactus project in Arizona, providing the additional space required to support its planned development and operations.

The acquisition includes 827 ha from a consortium of private landowners, completed on August 29, and a 32.4-ha parcel purchased in June. With the new land package, Arizona Sonoran’s consolidated holdings at the Cactus project now total 3 174 ha.

The parcels will be used to host key infrastructure such as solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW) plant facilities, leach pads and waste rock stockpiles. The company said the purchase also allowed flexibility for the potential development of future mineralisation and sulphide deposits.

“During the ongoing advancement of the pending prefeasibility study, it became evident that while the necessary water and mineral rights were in place, once the estimated mine life extended past year 15, additional acreage for eventual surface operations would be needed,” president and CEO George Ogilvie said.

“With the addition of the purchased lands, contiguous to the Cactus project and of corresponding scale, we believe that all land requirements are now in place to support the anticipated project plan, including a significant heap-leach and SX/EW copper cathode operation,” he said, adding the deal represented “a major de-risking event” for the project.

Ogilvie noted that the structure of the land purchase provided “a financially manageable path forward for the company and the Cactus project through the remaining studies to project financing and an eventual final investment decision as early as Q4/2026”.
